Leading Causes of WWI
The United States must be prepared for war. There have been many leading causes up to us having to be prepared, such as the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, Imperialism, nationalism, militarism, and a system of alliances.
The Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand was after his visit to Sarajevo. A bomb had been thrown at his car and bounced off and injured two officers. He then later rode to the hospital to see the wounded officers, and as he got out of his car a 19 year old shot him and his wife.
Nationalism was a big part in starting the war. There were two main things that contributed to WWI. The first one was for countries with great powers to act in their own national interest. The second one had to do with ethnic diversities in Eastern Europe. Hungarians and Austrians governed many other countries. Italians, Romanians, and Serbs wanted to join their neighboring lands, This then lead to treaty's and alliances between countries.
The alliances then later came a big part of security for these European countries. The alliances bound the great powers to come to each other's aid in the event of an attack. Some of the countries, such as Great Britain and France, didn't really take things serious and led its creators into war.
In the United States Newspapers had a hit headline. "Austria Declares War, Rushes Vast Army into Serbia; Russia Masses 80,000 Men in Border." Americans read the news with great alarm, ad wondered how all the countries could be at war with each other.
Many things led to the Americans joining the war such as propaganda, American Neutrality, The Preparedness Movement and the Peace Movement.
After these movements and events the United States finally declared war against Germany.
